The Black Keys are a great band that I've enjoyed for a number of years now. I was asked to do a poster for the French leg of their tour. Having experienced not only Paris, but smaller and friendlier Lyon last year, I wanted to give the people of France another taste of my work, and hopefully a nice poster to commemorate the show.

The inspiration was sculptural works I got to see in France, in particular those celebrating the French Revolution. I designed the poster loosely as a representation of Marie Antoinette's head. I wanted it to be beautiful and sculptural, and maybe just a bit tragic. I don't know where the Black Key's music fits in, but to me, it works well. There is something tragic in their music, there's passion and angst and sexiness, and I tried to put all that in.

The lettering was inspired by the fonts used in the Paris Metro. I couldn't believe them the first time I saw them. It reminded me of 60's era hippy letters, but older looking. I think my friends in Paris take it for granted that they're surrounded by this beautiful old design work. I live on the west coast, so we never see any signs that old!

This is a five color 18" x 24" screenprint on Cream Speckletone paper. Printed in Chino, CA at Inhouse Printing.

2011 recap

2011.... Man, what a year. So much good and bad! So much change and self discovery. This year will stand out I think. I didn't travel as much as 2010, which was a good thing. I was home much more, got to spend a lot of time with my kids. Some highlights:

• Our 2 year old broke her leg. It was tough, but she adapted and was hobbling around on her pink cast. Jennifer and I felt like crying (and probably did) everyday. It was a pretty dark part of the year for us.

• I started teaching college art (part time- one class per semester). It has been one of the most humbling "projects" I've worked on. I can't believe the amount of work it added to my schedule. I like it, though it kills me to have to give bad grades. Sometimes the most talented kids have the worst work ethic. I decided to keep teaching one class per semester.

• My kids continue to grow up. It kills me.

• I feel like I developed further as an artist, mainly I'm getting a handle on screenprinting with it's strengths and limitations. I'm still trying to push it, learn more, and make not only posters for bands but pieces of art.

• With art making, I'm continuing to find myself. I tried changing things up with oils, it was tough and it's a medium I need to revisit. I'm back in that same place I arrive each year, where I don't know what the fuck I'm doing with my art. But that's good. That's when the random accidents happen and it sparks a whole series.

• My daughter became a 1st grader!! What?!?!

• In September I went to France for the first time. Can't wait to go back, had a great time! I don't know why, but it peaked my interest in graffiti and vandalism just a little.

• I think Jennifer came into her own as a cook. Maybe this is not newsworthy, but I enjoyed chili, various soups, dishes and good, healthy homecooked food to eat throughout the year.

• I moved to a new studio, which has been a HUGE change for me.It was a good change, it's kept me very productive being around all these guys.

• In November our grandma passed away. It was a sad time for the family and we're still dealing. It brought us a little closer together I think. RIP Grandma Marian!

• My grandma passing coincided with a lot of love from my fans as I sold over 700 prints in November. It was an emotional time, such a mix of feelings. It was a real ordeal getting that many prints out in a three week span.I have the best fans on the planet.

I went to France in September for two group shows I was involved in. Here's some pictures.

I love flying and I always like the window seat. I have been on many flights at this point in my life and I still get excited. That is Lake Geneva with the Alps in the background.

I was struck by all the monuments celebrating the French Revolution. There's beautiful things all over in Lyon.

The morning of my first whole day I did a lot of exploring. They have real rivers (I'm from Southern CA- we have trickling streams of polluted water for the most part). I happened upon a motorcycle rally (???) in the main square of Lyon.

I needed soap. Le Chat! The cat became a reoccuring theme for some of the art I made in France.

Kevin brought me some desserts from town and told me the story of the these little egg pastries. I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called...

Kevin made me a homecooked meal. Scallops! Sooo good.... this is the raw ones, my photos didn't turn out of the cooked meal!

The next day was the opening at Rhone Alps Region in Lyon. Here's some photos. I met with press, made some new friends and ate some weird and tasty foods.

Goodbye old studio, thanks for the memories!

In October 2005, just a few months after we had our first daughter, I leased an industrial space near our small apartment. It was a pretty big decision for Jennifer and I, it was another bill (several) and another responsibility for us- already under pressure with a two month old baby!

It ended up being the right move- I‘d been working on our kitchen table or driving across town to work in my parent’s garage. We had moved into a two room apartment but there was still no room to work. I found a nice 1000 sq/ft industrial warehouse type shop with a small office in front. I got the idea from seeing the Clayton Brother’s studio a few years before. The place was big enough, versatile and had plenty of storage space, with large walls, a roll up door and high ceilings. It was perfect, and I got right to work.

I’m a little sad to leave when I look back at all the exhibits and paintings I worked on at this space, not to mention how my life has changed the past six years. It’s been a pretty cool/strange/awesomely/fucked up/rad six years!

Now I’ve moved into a great new space with friends. The new studio has everything the old one has with more support and camaraderie. Gonna be a new adventure and I’m hoping to get many years of great work accomplished here. But I’ll keep in my heart my little studio which helped me get off the ground!!

I am working with Jarritos on a project of theirs. I'm part of a jury for the Jarritos Flavor City Art Contest. Here's some more info:

Eddie Vedder 2011 US Tour Triptych

I had an idea to create a triptych poster set with the first and last shows of the tour, with the middle one being the US Tour poster. I am lucky that there's some great people working EV's merch and they went for it! The three posters show the acoustic, electric and ukulele guitars Eddie uses during his performance. It was important to me to get his guitars looking right, so I worked from photos of his gear. The drawings were all done by hand in ink on bristol and then scanned in and colored using Photoshop and my trusty Wacom. These are probably my most time intensive and detailed prints I've worked on so far. Working on and off, each one of these took a week to finish, but the end result is worth it I think. Originally it was a triptych with state birds featured, but I think this turned out much better!

The Providence print represents the beginning, the morning hours, the sun rising in the East. The middle tour poster shows L.A. and NYC silhouettes, showing the travel across the states. The Seattle poster is the end of the tour, the night has come and the day is over. I decided to keep the "Eddie Vedder" lettering somewhat hidden, or at least not the first thing you see. I tried some new things (new to me) with the screenprinting, trying to take advantage of bitmapping to make gradients, and overlapping colors to create subtle color shifts. I'm going to keep pushing myself, I really love screenprinting.

I got to watch Eddie Vedder perform at the Long Beach show a few weeks ago and it was pretty rad! He's got some great fans! They cheered when he finished a song, cheered when he picked up his electric guitar, cheered at the first strum, then cheered when he began to sing. Loud cheers, deafening even! I really dig Eddie's guitar work, in particular his "Into The Wild" soundtrack. I probably ended up listening to it about ten times while I worked on these three prints. I read some comments about not "getting it" with the first poster. That's cool, when you make art not everyone gets it. Eddie's song are about a lot of different things, relationships, places, life experiences, and I was trying to capture some of those things in the prints. I never approach these gig posters as advertisements for the band, the venue, the locale, etc. Maybe that's the wrong approach, but first and foremost I'm making a piece of art. I'm trying to take the essence of what the musician does and mix it with what I do. I like his storytelling abilities, and I think I am a storyteller as well, only visually rather than auditory. There's stories in these pieces, as there are in all of my works.

The Black Keys- London Ontario screenprint

I have been a huge fan of The Black Keys for a few years now and jumped at the opportunity to do a poster for them. This print is based on the Aesop's fable "The caged bird and the bat". I liked the visual, and somehow I felt it related to the story telling in The Black Keys songs.

This is a four color print on 18" x 24" cream archival paper with a standard signed edition (Pink) of 230 prints (much, much less will be available), and a variant edition (blue) of 25 prints.

I just got these in this morning and they look great! The Speckletone paper looks pretty cool, and all the subtle overlaps and shading turned out how I planned. Still doing most of the drawing by hand, but my trusty Wacom is saving me hours and hours. Screenprinting is getting funner and funner to me...

Japan- Part 1

I went to Japan last October with Maxx and his wife Rosie. Just realized I never posted the pictures. What can I say, time flies lately....

This was my first time to Japan, we were the guests of Zac Pac who we had designed a set of Be@rbricks with. Our host Kazuhiro showed us a great time, fed us well and had a busy schedule for Maxx and I. It was a wonderful trip.

We were staying in Ebisu, and got in pretty late.

Kaz and his boss took us out to eat the first night. Great food. Soo good...

Vending machines everywhere surprised me. You can see them all up and down the streets in some places. I was out really late solo exploring and getting lost the first night. Couldn't sleep. Seemed safer at 3am than any big city I've been in.

I watched a lot of weird TV the next morning.

Maxx coffee. I sampled some strange beverages.

They had pretty good candy. Japanese seem big on their chocolate and they had beautifully designed packaging. Good design everywhere really.

We met with some apparel stores.

This is a burger from Blacow. One of the best burgers I've tasted. They use Kuroge Wagyu beef also known as Kobe beef. Aw man...

We painted a wall at Dexee Diner. Ah man, more excellent food! Eating and painting, eating and painting!

It was Maxx's birthday.

That was the first full day. Man, I was tired! That night I just melted into my tiny bed in my tiny room...

Mother and Father print

I've been wanting to take advantage of UV inks on wood for several years now. The process makes for a unique and different looking print as the wood texture is still visible through the image. In addition, UV inks are safer for the environment than other inks which rely on evaporation to cure. We printed these on Forest Stewardship Council certified sustainable plywood, which looks great and feels great! Each print is unique with beautiful subtle wood grain thoughout. These are unframed but they come ready to hang (you can always add a frame, but I think they look great as is).

Eddie Vedder Melbourne Print

I loved visiting Melbourne in 2009, and can't wait to come back with the family. I stayed in St. Kilda and explored Melbourne by bus, tram and foot. Beautiful place, great people. I jumped at the opportunity to do a poster for Eddie Vedder playing at the Palais Theatre, which was around the corner from my hotel. I even had my own photos of the venue and the creepy/cool Luna Park head. I used my own photo reference for the Melbourne skyline (as seen from St. Kilda pier). ~~Available at my store- www.potatostamp.com~~

This print matches up with the Brisbane print to complete a diptych. It was a lot of work, all hand drawn, but I like the results....

Eddie Vedder Screenprint

I was asked to design a poster for Eddie Vedder's Australian solo tour. I have a deep love for Australia- the people, the culture, the wildlife; I had a wonderful time visiting and can't wait to go back. I wanted this poster to reflect Eddie Vedder's rich acoustic storytelling mixed with elements of Brisbane and my own personal observations of Australia.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm continuing to try new techniques in screenprinting and feeling more confident. I know the actual printing is a somewhat mechanical process, so I continue to hand draw as much as I can on my light table.

Fall 2010

Fall 2010 shot by like a whirlwind. I had travel, conferences or family happenings every single weekend from July to November. Somehow I ended up with three business trips to NYC which is fine by me, I love the big ol' apple and Fall is an excellent time to visit. I went to Japan with Maxx (upcoming blog entry) and ended it all with a trip to Miami. Hoping to slow down in 2011! But not too slow... here's some pictures...

Got into Miami a bit early and left early before all the art openings really started to go off. Kinda bummed I didn't get to see a single art fair, but I guess I was more interested in painting this year.

I was asked to add a mural to the Wynwood Walls project that was started last year. I brought Maxx242 out to help and to paint with him on a separate wall.

On a side note, this band was one of my favorites way back when I was in junior high and high school and well into my college years. My Angel Dust cassette got played so much it wore out and eventually I had to buy all their albums on CD. I remember I wanted hair that was a combination of Mike Patton, the dude from Information Society and Corey Glover from Living Colour. That would have been bad...

But it was cool to do a poster for these guys, I feel their music has always had integrity and they tried new things and keep it artistic. Faith No More! Yeah!

I'm working on planning for a Miami mural in December and I realized I never finished posting the happenings and photos from Miami 2009. It was a long time ago, but it was fun. So here they are...

This is the place to go if you want to see burners. Ewok killed it. Dabs and Myla finished from the day before. There was so much good graf out there, I had over 100 pictures. makes me want to try letters again.

Met up with artist/sculptor/photographer Adam Wallacavage. Went looking for more art, stopped by my work at Scope to hang out with the staff of Jonathan Levine Gallery.

Marathon run through Art Basel, thanks Arrested Motion for getting us in!

Found Tara McPherson, Buffmonster, and Chaz (London Police) at a party. I was the designated driver for the night. Randomly found Ewok putting some late night finishing touches on his burner.

The last day I dropped my pal Jon off at the airport. Then hung out with Adam all day looking at art on walls and in fairs. It was a little mind numbing. Cool shit by Sever, Revok, Retna, Parskid, Kinsey, Twist, Tyke, Ron English, Logan Hicks… the list goes on, my head was spinning that night when I tried to sleep! The last thing we saw was the Okay Mountain installation at Pulse. Man, this thing was sweet! Thanks to Michael Sieben for getting us in to check it out.

Flew home. And happy to be on my way!

The Deek revealed!

Thanks to all my Comicon friends and the Kidrobot staff this past weekend! I had a lot of fun in NYC! Here is The Deek, NYC was the first time I saw it in person, and I'm super happy with it. I'm easing back into making art toys and having fun. More is on the way...

The Deek is a toy I designed for the KR Black line. It's a monster that slides around unseen in the dark of the night, looking to frighten children. He also works as a night lumberjack, chopping wood in deep dark forests. It was inspired by a character my dad would talk about when my brothers and I were little... "I hear The Deek coming!" And we'd run and hide under the blankets!

This toy is being released tomorrow at the New York Comic Con at the KR booth. It's 6.5" tall, has an edition of 150 and will be for sale for $100. I'll be at the KR booth (2674 ) from 1-3pm, come by and get your Deek signed! That sounded kinda wrong....

A few months ago I got together with my friends Greg Simkins, Deph and Maxx242 to paint a large wall in the hot I.E. Summer. For me, it was the second spraypaint piece I've worked on in a decade, and it felt a little foreign at first. It's crazy how many colors are available now. I finally felt like I could translate my own paintings into wall pieces with all the colors we have access to. Those three guys rocked it, and I felt honored to be painting with them (I did the skull). Seeing this makes me want to do more!! (click on images to see them BIGGER)

The past few months (and really the last two years) I've been going nonstop. There was either a convention to prepare for, projects due, poster orders needing filled or a show to plan out and paint. It's been nonstop work, and I love it and know I'm lucky, but it takes it's toll too. Time to slow things down a bit. I don't have a show planned for the first time in eight years but it feels right.

To anyone I have been flaky with the past month, I apologize and there is a reason. I was pretty jacked up with a bad cold that I couldn't shake. It got bad enough that my wife made me go see the doctor. I was diagnosed with Intermittent Asthma! It is brought on by catching a cold or a flu or too much dust and causes breathing problems by constricting the tiny airways in your lungs. It's the best kind of asthma you can have, but the doctor warned me- you can still die from it if you don't treat it. It's hereditary, but could also be from living in Riverside for so long (L.A.'s smog settles here). I always thought I was just prone to getting longterm cough because I don't get enough sleep. I thought I was just unhealthy. Nope, it was asthma. When I finally went in I was breathing at 50% of my lung capacity. No wonder I felt like shit. For weeks I had just felt like sleeping but I had too much work to do.

So I'm controlling it now and feeling much better. I think I've had this since college over ten years ago, so it feels good to know what I have and do what I need to do to take care of myself. So once again, to those who I flaked on, never emailed back, or didn't return your call, I am sorry! I'm still catching up.

I'm going to post in here more often- I have posts I started for things like Miami Art Basel Part 2 from 9 months ago. For now here is a look into Summer 2010. It went real fast.

Summer started off with a mad rush to finish paintings.

My girls are getting older. It warms my heart to see them play together and love each other.

My dad and I built a huge (and heavy) crate to ship work to NYC.

I went to NYC.

Apparently it was Gay Pride Week.

Back in the I.E. painted a wall with some friends.

Went to the Illustration Conference in Pasadena. Langham Hotel was pretty sweet.

Went to the Comicon in San Diego.

Ralph and Beth had a baby girl!

I had the opportunity to work on a Star Wars print with my friend Mitch, it was a double no-brainer, Star Wars and screenprinting! Yeah! Two things I love! I got to pick a moment or a character or a situation, and I ended up going with the Power Droid, also known as a Gonk Droid.

Star Wars was a pretty big deal for me as a kid. I was only 2 when the movie came out, and I can’t even remember if I saw it or not in the theater. The characters and story were known to many of us mainly from the toys! The toys! Oh they were wonderful, and we played with them for hours (and wore out the BEST and Sears catalogue)!

One of my favorite action figures was the Power Droid, and I didn’t really know much about the little guy, but for some reason he (I pictured it being male for some reason) captivated my imagination. I realized at some time that he’s barely even in the movie, which added to his mystique. Over the years he functioned as the worn out, floppy-legged power supply for numerous Transformers, GI Joe’s and Construx. He is small and cute, and found a place in my childhood heart. I still have the little guy. This piece is an ode to the Power Droid!

As usual, I did all the drawing by hand, and scanned everything into Photoshop. You can see some of the layers below. At 24" x 36", 350 dpi and 10 layers (while working on it), it was a pretty large file.

Here's the final- Scrap Yard Power Droid ended up as a 7 color screenprint that measures 24" x 36". I have some to sell, check back soon....

Pearl Jam Arras France Print

Here's a little process blog entry for my new Pearl Jam- Arras, France poster.

First I make a lot of sketches, and came up with one I thought worked (other ideas might be used in the future, so I don't want to show them just yet). Once I have a good design, I try to figure out how to layer the colors. I have to do this ahead of time, maybe because I am new to this but sometimes it gets so complex I can't figure out what layers should be over each other. I like to know how things are going to be screen printed.

I use the computer to scan in all the sketches, and rough color all the layers (above). I take that layered rough color sketch, and print up an actual size drawing of the main line art (in this case 4 sheets taped together). Then I take that to my light table for inking.

I worked on a new font called "Neon Boner", it is my first font I have created and was a real pain in the ass.... but I am happy with how it turned out. I did the type on a different piece of bristol in case I needed to reposition things.

After the main linework and text was finished, I used them to trace for the other colors. Then everything is scanned into the computer (can be nightmarish sometimes!), and colors tweaked. I did 95% of this piece and all the layers by hand, which I have been told is the old fashioned way. That's fine by me, I like working the old fashioned way! I recently bought a Wacom but enjoy the actual drawing and inking so much that I don't see myself using it except for the tedious things I usually do with a mouse. But we will see...

The final is an eight color screenprint that measures 18" x 24" and printed on creme colored archival paper. I got them a while back and am very pleased! Screenprinting is getting a bit addictive, as the final prints have all been looking nicer than I expect.

I'm excited to be showing a new group of paintings at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in just a couple weeks. My last NYC solo exhibition was back in 2007- it has been awhile and I'm looking forward to exploring New York and seeing some of my pals! If you're in town the opening is Saturday June 26, 7-9pm.

This new body of work feel like a tipping point or breakthrough to me- I've been exploring new themes, new techniques, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and possibly breaking the surface into a new direction. I usually don't feel like this but it's been a rollercoaster ride, full of discoveries and failures, emotions and hard work. This show has been more personal than those in the past, as I've had to dive into the subjects of family and life and death. It has also been extremely rewarding and I'm excited to share them. I'm going to keep painting and exploring this new path but this will be my last solo exhibit for a while. So come by if you can!

I did a gig poster for Pearl Jam's Madison Square Garden show last night, and thought I'd share my process in here. This print seems very polarizing (hmm, kinda like my LOST poster) among PJ fans, they either love it or hate it. I have designed many screenprints over the past 8 years, but this was my first gig poster and it's a different beast for sure. It's been fun and I hope I get the opportunity to do more. Thanks go out to Mr. Siglin who made it happen and my friend MAXX242. You guys rule.

I've found that all screenprint artists set things up differently. It's tough to find a good how-to online, especially looking for 100% hand drawn. There are plenty that show the actual screen printing process that are pretty cool, but I was more interested in seeing an artist's process- what do they ink on? How do they deal with multiple colors? How do they scan in their work?

So I thought I'd show how I have been working. It's a mix of old fashioned hand drawing and Photoshop. Most artists today are using Wacom tablets and for many the art is completely digital. I got a Wacom after I made this print, and I see it's going to be very helpful, but I think I still prefer to draw the old fashioned way. Nothing like a sharpened HB pencil grinding away on paper!

1. Brainstorm- I treated this job as more of a fine art project than an illustration. Listened to some Pearl Jam, and started drawing. New York City. So glad I was asked to do the NY show. I love the place. Never lived there, but visited enough that I feel comfortable there and I know my way around (except I still get lost on the western side of Greenwich Village- no grid!!). I wanted to show a piece of NYC that was recognizable but not so epic. No Statue of Liberty, no Empire State Building. Hmmm...

During one of my earlier visits to NYC, we stopped by an internet cafe at Astor Place several times a day for a week. I saw this awesome cube sculpture and a bum sleeping under it. It was dirty and dusty and had tags on it. Everyday I saw it it seemed to change. I finally saw someone turning it! Holy shit! I still smile when I turn a corner and see the cube. That sculpture holds a special little place in my heart and I know many NYers love it as well. The cube had to be in the poster, it is a subtle reference, like, if you're not from NYC, you probably don't recognize it. The rest was just exploring my Sotofish character. And I wanted to do the teeth as letters so I went for it. Pearl Jam seems to have a pretty quick and easy approval process. They were down so I started working on the final.

2. Linedrawing- I think this is sometimes called the "key line", it is basically the outline that ties the whole image together. I enlarged my rough sketch to 18" x 24" on the computer, and printed it onto four 8.5 x 11" sheets and taped them together. Then I taped a large sheet of Bristol Vellum over that and began to ink it on the light table (above). Took me longer than I thought it would- over two days to finish it. I can paint faster than I can draw. I was pretty happy with it, though the supporting band was changed later. Outline finished (below)

3. Shading and highlights- Next I took that first line drawing and taped a large sheet of marker paper over it. Marker paper is thin and very transparent and does not bleed at all, so the lines are very smooth. This is where you have to start planning- how many colors? What order should the colors be printed in? I prefer to figure it all out ahead of time and hopefully make it easy for the printer. I tend to think like a painter even doing screenprinting, so I know I'd like a shadow and some dimension. I did a big drawing of the shadows, highlights and fill for the Cube, shadows on the ground, and shading for the teeth. There were about 10 drawings that I then needed to scan in.

4. Scanning and assembly (kill me)- The scanning was the most difficult part, it is hell taking an 18" x 24" ink drawing and scanning it on a letter sized scanner. There were 8 segments that did not want to line up, luckily I know a trick or two. The real problem then becomes scanning all the other drawings and getting everything to line up. I did end up doing a lot of small correcting with a mouse, this will be much easier with the Wacom. I always work larger than needed, so this file was 18 x 24" at 400dpi, and it was all done in Photoshop.

5. Colors- colors have always been an easy thing for me while painting. But limit my color palette and I find it much harder. I enjoy that aspect of screenprinting, I like the challenge, but I think I still have much to learn. With every print I do, and with seeing other prints from artists I admire, I'm learning some of the tricks. Like shading using a layer that's bitmapped. Or using transparent inks to make different colors. I didn't know about those methods while working on this one. I will try them for sure, but I also like the look of strong solid graphics. It reminds me of 80's skateboard decks or something. My paintings are so dimensional, I like the challenge of breaking that into a few colors for screenprinting. If I do shading in these prints would I be better off just making a painting?

6. Final- colors are picked, all the layers are looked at and checked for out of place marks, and it's uploaded to the printers. Took a week to finish this. Half of that time drawing, half on the computer. I could have finished a large painting in that same time. I learned a lot, and the next print I finish is much easier.

Last week I got the box, opened it and the prints looked better than I expected.

LOST poster- Claudia's Skull

This is a secret print that I only told a few loved ones about. Didn't know it was coming out today, this is one of those "three screenprints a week" weeks I guess. I love LOST, and am looking forward to seeing how it all ends!

I had the episode "Across the Sea". The big thing that stood out was Jacob and MIB's mother, Claudia being brutally murdered by "Mother". Cracked her skull with a rock, and stole her babies. MIB and Jacob were created out of Claudia's death.

Here are some pics of the actual drawings. Someday I might work more digitally, but for now call me old fashioned...

Sotofish1 Print- background and sneak peek

My best friend in third grade, Dwayne Britton sometimes called me "a little sotofishy" in a fake British accent (his accent was actually pretty damn good for an 8 year old). The nickname lingered for a while and in 6th grade stuck. People started calling me Sotofish.

I enjoyed having a nickname, even more so that is was completely nonsensical. Sometime in 1986 I developed a character and called it the Sotofish. It had pointy, triangular ears, a circular face and a wide grinning mouth of teeth- always with one distinct gold tooth. I realized only recently that the round shape and ears were directly inspired by seeing graffiti along the 5 freeway in L.A.- the L.A. rivercats. I must have seen these as a 9 year old and kept it stored away in my brain for a while. The Sotofish appeared on all my school notebooks and peachy folders, I frequently "tattooed" it on myself and my little brothers and I drew it on the white circle logo on my duct taped Converse All-Stars. I spray painted it in skate spots before I knew what graffiti was, and as the graphics smeared off my skateboard, I would paint the Sotofish using whatever model kit enamels I had in the garage.

It was my first creation that felt completely original to me. It was my own symbol, and an early form of self portraiture. It takes me back to the past, not only my early days of discovering art, graffiti and skateboarding, but the youthful days of trying to make sense of the world. The Sotofish has been appearing in my paintings the last few years, and I decided to make a new screen print- Thee definitive Sotofish print!

This is actually the start of a print set. The first print, "Sotofish1", is basic and iconic, the start of a story (think of Jim Phillips' famous Rob Roskopp decks and the progression it showed). I'm planning on completing 4-6 prints in this set, with each print getting more complex with technique and number of colors. The first print is 6 colors, and the final one could be 25-30. All will be editions of 100, on 22" x 30" paper. Sotofish1 drops in a few weeks. Here is a sneak peek:

Miami 2009

Another year of Art Basel Miami craziness. Another year where I post this stuff three+ months late! I guess it's better late then never. I had over 600 pictures to go through, so it took a while to figure this one out.

Got to see the Salton Sea on the way out. Thing is massive.

When I got to Miami I found that my paint had emptied out in my suitcase, luckily I zip locked em', but man, three bags of paint exploded, put a damper on some of my painting plans.

First night met up and hung out with the Jonathan Levine Gallery staff, went to Primary Flight (the exhibit) in Miami Beach, got some dinner, and ended up at the Max Fish pop up bar. Eric White was there, Mr. Levine, Carlo McCormick, Tristan Eaton and a whole slew of other characters.

Next morning slept in a little, watched the manatees down below in the lagoon and picked up my friend from the airport. Went to a couple art fairs, found Dabs and Myla and some giant seed pods. Miami is kinda crazy, always weird shit to see..

Some art, Dave Cooper, Doze, Maya Hayuk, etc… a few of my watercolors I exhibited...

Next morning got started on my mural. Primary Flight hooked it up, got me a nice wall and supplied us with some paint. Even had access to scaffolding which was very appreciated. One of the highlights of my trip was getting to meet (and get photographed by) Martha Cooper. For those in Miami it is at 6th and 2nd. streets.Finished in one long day. Painted until it was dark. Probably could have done more, made it more intricate. I was planning on coming back the next day but so much of my paint was emptied and besides, I was happy with it when I saw it in the daylight. Tristan Eaton was painting on the other side, he put in a lot of hard work and several days! End of the evening burger was pretty good, even though I ate all the paint off my fingers too.

Third day we checked out my mural, looked finished to me, besides, it was raining. So we headed out to the Everglades. Didn't realize it was so close to Miami. It was nice to get away from all the visual overload and take in some nature. Such a different world from all the saturated graffiti and urban ugliness that is the Wynwood district. I got very close to a couple alligators, very dumb, I didn't know how fast they were. Luckily, they were sluggish or maybe just liked me. Saw some giant spiders, jumping gators, and got rained on and then ate some traditional Florida cuisine. Frog asses and alligator nuggets.

I'm currently working on my newest body of work for my NYC show in late June 2010. This work is a little more personal and emotional to me than some of the past subjects I have painted.

The show is about growing mentally and physically, becoming an adult, seeing your parents age and seeing your children start to sprout. It's about living and dieing, love, anger, joy, pain, things that bring us good times and bad times. All the fucked up and beautiful things that happen between taking your first breath and your last.

I will always love painting, and I'm having fun working on these pieces, but after this show I'll be taking a break. This will be my last exhibit for a long time.

After this show I will be keeping busy. I have some museum exhibits in the works, I'm planning some large scale murals, I am going to explore print making further, and I'm looking into taking some of my characters and worlds into the realm of entertainment (anyone know any Hollywood contacts? email me..). And of course I will still be painting the whole time, experimenting and pushing myself. Having fun..

Didn't quite work that way! The art is kinda funny to me, I have no idea what they were supposed to mean, I wonder if the alien chick is from one of the flying saucers? I've recently been given the opportunity to work on some gig posters for Pearl Jam. I always dreamed of making gig posters, I made mock-up posters complete with fake band names in the mid 90's but nothing ever came of them. So it's pretty fun and cool to be working on posters for Pearl Jam, a band I enjoy and respect and which could easily have been the soundtrack to my high school years. I'm psyched to be working on these!

Though I'm not an accomplished gig poster artist I am no stranger to fine art prints and have been invited by The Ten Club to take part in their art event. It's a poster/art/music convention in May at the Showbox in Seattle. I'll be there selling hard to find prints, original drawings and paintings, whatever merch I can bring and at least one of my Pearl Jam posters should be released by then (look for the other to be released in early July). Should be a fun event for a nice Spring Seattle Sunday, there will be some dope artists in attendance, including my friend Maxx. Come out and say hi, I have never been to Seattle and am looking forward to meeting other artists and fans from up north.

I've also just finished a top secret print project for the Alamo Drafthouse, as well as working on a couple of my own screenprints to be released in the next couple months. I think it's the new light table I found on Craigslist, it's inspiring me to work on intricate screenprints that I would have had a hard time pulling off before.

Man, I've been having a lot of fun working on all these print projects, I'm doing them the old fashioned way, layers and layers of drawings, huddled over the light table drawing and inking away (then scanning and layering in Photoshop)! My back hurts, my drawing hand is cramped and tired, but I think it's worth it. I would like to show the process pics on here, but with most of these they need to remain secret until the print is released.

Australia Part 2

The Urban Hotel had good room service food. Almost every day it was easier to order something in the morning and get started with some energy, than to look around St. Kilda for a quick breakfast. "Crispy Bacon" in Australia (as well as the UK) seems to be "soft floppy bacon" to me. I guess in the US we crisp the hell out of it. I like both varieties, bacon is just good.

This was the first day of the Semi Permanent conference. It's a seminar series with speakers from the design world, photography, motion graphics, film, special effect, and of course, illustration/art. I had such a good time hearing the different speakers, we're all connected through our visual culture but each of us comes from very different worlds.

This was the first year they held it in Melbourne. The convention center looked pretty cool. Slanted lines everywhere. Melbourne seems to have lots of crooked architecture, diagonal lines and futurism mixed with... something (remnants of British colonial style??).

This is Luke Lucas. The first speaker and one of my favorites. He is responsible for the magazine Lifelounge, if you have not seen it, get a copy now! Luke is a master at working with type, he does very inspiring and clever work. Great to meet him!

In between speakers I explored the convention center and found more futuristic rooms.

Burger Rings? I was tempted to try them, but decided against it. Also Cheetos Cheese & Bacon Balls. Different. I decided to pass. Snacks are expensive in Oz...

Tara McPherson gave her talk in the afternoon, very cool to see her story and her process. We are old Art Center buddies, so it was neat to see how far we have come.

Sometimes I kinda felt like I was in the city of Macross.

Then the next day came, I did my talk, threw out some stickers, cough drops, toys, and candy to the audience. Helped me loosen up, and I think it warmed up the crowd. The talk went good, I think.. yeah, I'm sure it went good. I felt a strange clarity up there on stage, like I was in control of my destiny and 100% not nervous for the first time talking in front of so many people. Maybe I am just getting used to public speaking over the years. Took a quick iPhone craptastic picture of the audience. This is just the middle row, there are rows to the side and a whole upper deck area. Thanks all you attendees for the warm response I received! I had a blast and met some great Australians.

Alex Jaeger from ILM was the last speaker. On his way over from LAX their 747 hit a bird which smashed the nosecone and took out their weather radar. They had to dump the fuel and return. Read about it here. Very interesting talk, I'm always fascinated by special effects and entertainment design. Alex had some great work to show the audience, and of course ILM has such a rich history and has been so inspirational to artists over the years. I really respect these guys. For a while it was my goal to work in that industry, and about ten years ago I made a decision to pursue painting and illustration rather than entertainment design. Still a lot of love for all that though..

After the conference I ate a weird meal. Some sort of cold chicken/ham/pistachio loaf. Pretty much the funkiest meal I had there. I should have asked what it was before ordering haha! Wasn't terribly bad, but I was cold the whole time and a cold meal was not what I had in mind!

Martin McIntosh is the best. Thanks again for all the rides!

Went to the Semi Permanent after party. The band was pretty dope- The Scare. Singer was doing some crazy shit. I don't see much live music being a family guy, I like shows but would rather be at home with the kidlets. So it was nice to feel the loud music and drink a few beers.

The party was down this seedy alley. Very Motley Crew...

The next day I had a signing with Tara at Outre Gallery. Didn't get any good pics. Anyone out there have any?

The day before Tara suggested the Eggs Benedict breakfast. I'm always a little freaked out by yolk. Everyone thinks I'm crazy- "Yolk is goood!" they say, but I dunno. It's weird man. So runny. Yolk. Even the name is weird. She was right though, this was very good! I think the rocket added some nice flavor to it.

Put up stickers all over. I am such a vandal haha...

Never heard of these... they were like Cheetos but a little different.

More food. Vietnamese. I never did get to eat a proper Australian meal. Went to a place that had Kangaroo steaks but they were all out. Apparently, they don't raise them as food, they actually have to go out and shoot them in the wild. I asked somewhere if they had Koala meat and they laughed at me.

Angelique Houtkamp and her husband Peter were in town for the opening of her show at Outre Gallery. Very nice people, and Angelique is a talented watercolorist. It was nice spending time with them.

Along with them was Dutch photographer duo Fotofloor!

This was the next morning, a view out my window. My last day. I was supposed to paint at Hosier Lane, but the news said it'd be raining all day. It was cold, windy, and I needed to find spraypaint and acrylics, so I decided against it. I am from Southern California, I am a wuss when it gets colder than 50 degrees.

Ordered some breakfast and watched some TV.

Decided to get some artwork done. I brought a bunch of supplies but hadn't had free time to make art till the end. Inks, watercolors and acrylics. Nice diffused lighting from the overcast Melbourne sky. Worked in a lot of geometrics- triangles, diamonds, diagonals- I guess reacting to my surroundings.

After a few hours I needed to get out, rain or shine. No fun to stay cooped up in a hotel in a new city.

Took the tram into the city, explored a bit, and went to Rialto Towers. It is the second tallest building in Melbourne and has an observation deck. I'm a sucker for high up places like this. I have a feeling most Melbournians have not been up here, just like most NYers have not been up the Empire State Building. It was pretty neat, and cold and windy.

Walked around St. Kilda some more...

Finally it rained. I made it back in time and modeled the koala mask I got for Shannon.

Worked on these pieces a bit more...

Next morning, on my way back. Qantas was nice to fly with. They call you "Luv" and ask for your "rubbish". I watched Star Trek on the way home but fell asleep somewhere in the middle. I was away one week. I was really missing Jennifer and the girls. Always good to return home to hugs and smiles! That's what it's all about... and it's also all about bringing home weird foreign candy bars.

Australia Part 1

I was asked by Semi-Permanent to come out and give a talk in Melbourne. I'd never been to Australia before, and was super excited. The flight over the Pacific was long, but I read a book (Sidhartha), read a couple magazines, slept, listened to some podcasts, wrote a little and before I knew it I was in OZ. My pal Martin McIntosh picked me up from the airport- very much appreciated after such a long flight!By the way, that Hulk Hogan poster was in an alley, apparently those guys are coming to Oz too!

My room was nice. They put up the speakers at the Urban Hotel in St. Kilda. Good lighting, which I put to good use later when I had some painting to do. The staff was cool. Do you know that people don't tip very often in Australia? When I got room service they would never accept my tips.

This was my view out the window. It was raining when I got there. After that initial rain it was clear until the last day.

The day cleared up, so I went for an afternoon walk after I took a nap. My hotel was right near the beach, but it was cold, very cold! Got some good and warm soup at the end of the St. Kilda pier.

Martin knew of my candy obsession so he got me a gift bag of sweets. Mmmm Pollywaffle's are nice. Looked like a huge turd at first, I hesitantly bit into it and was rewarded with sweet wafflecone and marshmallow heaven.

Australian money is cool too. I commented to someone that it's interesting that all the bills are different sizes, and they asked how blind people in the US can tell if they're getting ripped off. Hmmm, I don't know.

Martin took me to a place called Cookie for lunch. Good and spicy! Martin hooked it up!

There is a graffiti alley out there called Hosier Lane. I was supposed to paint something in there but never found the time.

The organizer of Hosier Lane, Andy Mac, has a gallery called Until Never. They had a really cool show of James Callahan's screen prints. I think this was a collab with several artists, one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Really made me wnt to do some prints and explore screenprinting..

This is the hub of Melbourne, Flinders Station. Kinda looks like Lego blocks to me.

Tara McPherson was also there to talk, throwing some gangsta signs with fans.

This was damn good. Chicken wrapped in bacon with a rice globe. Mmmm.

JANM show- Giant Robot... my painting.

Here's a clip I put together of my painting process. This piece took about a week. I am usually a fast painter but the last couple of years I have slowed down. I haven't been completely planning out my pieces, I prefer to work in a free form style. I usually work from a very, very rough sketch or idea and then dive in and see what happens. Sometimes there is no sketch at all and I just feel my way through the piece.

Much of my time is spent sitting in my pappazan chair looking and deciding what to paint (or paint over) next. It's a very reactive process, and sometimes things go well and other times I've had to start over completely. It's stressful when things aren't happening, but amazingly fun and mind opening when I hit something that feels right...

This piece will be at the Giant Robot JANM show.

I was going to release one of these and felt they worked very nice as a set. I'm very happy with them, the proofs look like the original watercolors.

The second is "Nature's Splendor" which is a companion piece to a 2009 sold out print, "Nature's Wrath". This print has already been offered to NW buyers in order to give them first dibs on completing the two print set. Babytattooville 2009

Had fun but my pictures kinda sucked this year. I'm a mad documenter, always taking photos, my method is quantity over quality. In the end, I hope to get something nice out of the tons of shitty pictures I take. But this time I went more as an observer, a welcomer, and a fan, and didn't feel like sticking the camera in everyone's faces. So I didn't get too many decent shots. Except I think these turned out cool as a set.

That was James Gurney, Audrey Kawasaki, Travis Louie, Buff Monster, KMNDZ, Miss Mindy, Liz McGrath, Greg Simkins, KRK Ryden and Yoskay Yamamoto. Cool lineup, wish I had more time to hang out this time. I was to leave directly after to Melbourne and was juggling family time with Babytattooville and packing, so it was a little crazy.

Didn't get a good shot of: Molly Crabapple, Michael Hussar, Phillip Warner... but you can find them on other sites. Also there was some past artists- Gris Grimley, Brandi Milne, Tara McPherson, Lola, Bob Dobb, Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, Jeffrey Scott... some others I'm forgetting...

Highlight of the trip for me was a Mission Inn scavenger hunt, I was grouped up with some badasses like Dov Kelemer, Audrey Kawasaki, Buff Monster, and Mystery's former wingman Tan! I think our group had some brains and experience (having frequently stayed here I knew how to get around the Mission Inn quite well). Fun stuff..

Coming soon my trip to Melbourne for Semi-Permanent Conference.... just got back yesterday. Oz is awesome...

Summer Fun!!

This summer went by and I've only blogged a little. Mostly just quick shoutouts for upcoming shows and events. I think it is a little crazier with two kids! Wow Natalie will be 6 months old in a few weeks!!! Whaaaat?? Time is flying! In any case, here is a little piece we like to call "Summer Fun"...

Introducing "The Seeker". I have been working on several top secret projects with Bigshot Toyworks the past couple months and this is the first of the large vinyl toys we have in the works. I'm super excited about my jump back into toys and Klim and Scott at Bigshot have been awesome.
